Question: How did you get into the temperature-controlled distribution sector and what is your role within Tillery Valley Foods?

Answer: I have worked within the food manufacturing industry for some 32 years and have been involved in the distribution side of that since 1996 (for the last 22 years). I am currently Logistics Manager for the Food manufacturer Tillery Valley.

Question: Can you firstly tell us what temperature controlled vehicles that Tillery Valley Foods operates?
 
Answer: Tillery Valley Foods operate a fleet of mainly DAF vehicles and also IVECO and Mercedes-Benz vans from 3.5t up to 44t, with the rigid fleet coupled to the Frigoblock under-slung refrigeration unit.

Question: Are you using telematics across your fleet currently? If so, what advantages do you see this gives your clients?

Answer: Yes, we use telematics in all our vehicles, which allows us to monitor driver progress and vehicle activity throughout the day, this includes monitoring of temperature of products in transit, so we have a complete picture of all variables.

Question: What has been the most important technical development in your temperature controlled bodies and refrigeration systems in recent years and how has it impacted on your operations within Tillery Valley Foods?

Answer: The Frigoblock refrigeration unit, is in my opinion, one of the best out there in the market, coupled with the latest design in refrigerated bodies and accessories to assist in the maintaining of the cold chain from despatch to the customer. 

Question: What environmental measures does Tillery Valley Foods incorporate to ensure best practice?
 
Answer: With the new fleet, we put a whole lot of emphasis on the aerodynamics, the design of the vehicles is all geared to aerodynamic performance along with user friendly approach. The under-slung refrigeration option was really important as it allowed us to enclose the cab top with the aerofoil and also allowed us to push the box body closer to the cab for improved aerodynamics. Along with other features including “Spray Down” mud flaps, wide radius box body and shaped roof for maximised air on and air off efficiencies, this has contributed to an overall improvement in our mpg’s of approximately 15% significantly reducing our carbon footprint. Our stance as a business is to reduce “food miles” as far as possible and in conjunction with our customers not to effect the service required.
