CATEGORY – LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
Sponsored by Carrier Transicold UK

WINNER: MR DANIEL STEWART

Judges comment:- Daniel Stewart’s Transport business started in the late 50’s as a general carriers business. By the very early 60’s the company had moved into temperature controlled vehicles and a chance meeting took place in the early 60’s with Daniel Stewart and Jim Gray of Gray and Adams at Smedleys Food processing plant in Dundee. This relationship went on for the next 45 years. Gray and Adams was to build the first refrigerated vehicles for Daniel Stewart Transport. The company was then taken over by the Christian Salvesen family with the intention of growing their own transport and distribution network. Daniel was instrumental in starting and growing the Christian Salvesen fleet to 550 vehicles and 9 depots. Throughout this period he was one of the pioneers to move with Gray and Adams into the one piece sandwich panel construction which everybody enjoys today and also ensured every vehicle was fitted with a temperature monitoring system to ensure best practice on each load. Daniel’s next project was to start a company well known in the industry as Corby Chilled Distribution and grew the company to have 6 depots throughout the UK and 200 refrigerated vehicles to service the depots.

The award was presented to Daniel by Scott Dargan of Carrier Transicold UK.

Daniel commented: “My first job was as a drivers mate and then as a driver prior to National Service. On demob. in 1952 I acquired a B licence lorry in Dundee. In 1954 I bought two A licenced lorries from B.R.S. disposal sales and started long distance haulage.

1963 saw my first venture into UK Refrigerated Transport, followed in 1965 by routine journeys to Sweden, Germany, Italy, Holland and France. These operations attracted free advertising in local/national newspapers.

In 1968, when I was operating twelve artics, I was approached by Salvesen`s, a deal was struck to buy my business with me as M.D. of their new venture. Sixteen years later that new venture had grown to 550 vehicles with 9 depots.

Corby Chilled Distribution Ltd was formed in 1993 when I took over a business in dire financial stress, turnover of £1.1m. no premises and loss making. 14 years later Corby Chilled operated 6 chilled depots, 200 vehicles and an annual turnover of £54m. My son Iain and daughter Carol joined the business in its early stages and were due much to the credit for its success. For me, the icing on the cake is the 2018 TCS&D Lifetime Achievement Award.”
